Cold weather today. What a week! Last Thursday, The Boy and I drove down to the start of the Appalachian Trail. Got there Friday, and he started the trek on Saturday. I drove home. Two days on the road, got home late Monday. Recuperated for a day. Wednesday went to work and the 4th person in my office got walked out for non-compliance to our vax mandate. 4 out of 15 people gone. Two have been replaced but it has been hard going. Went to work out Wednesday night, with the Osteofitness class over with. I am planning on going to my gym where I have better weight sets available and less clutter in my house.
On Thursday, I helped the Boyfriend book a flight home. He claims he almost died which I totally believe. He is now recuperating, and trying to figure out what to do with the 4 months he set aside to hike the trail. The trip was life-changing, though, however short.
Reading a book - confirms many things, one being calories in = calories out, but also confirms that what you eat is pretty important for body functions including brain health. Burn by Herman Pontzer

What happened to the boyfriend while hiking?

I'm curious about this, too. I've walked 10 mile sections of the Appalachian Trail when I lived in D.C., and not once did I ever have a brush with death. It's a very well maintained trail that gets constant use, and while you may get a couple of hours to yourself, nearing any point that has parking lot access will ensure that people will pass you. If he still has 4 months available, why give up?

@JustBananas a and others: the BF started hiking on a Saturday with a 40 pound pack. The weather was between 40 and 60 degrees and drizzling the whole time, so he got cold and wet. He did connect with another man on the trail who was in a similar situation (retired, planning on going the whole way) They hiked together until Wednesday which was the first road crossing. Have I mentioned that BF is legally blind? Fogged up glasses, rough terrain - he fell several times over the 5 days hiking. Ran out of food on day 5 because they had to hang at a shelter for an extra amount of time due to torrential rain and only had food for 4 days. The hike from the start to the crossing was supposed to be 3 days and ended up being 5. Didn't have water at one point. At the last hour of hiking he realized he had hypothermia and just kept moving so he would not collapse on the trail. They found out at the REI that someone else had been taken out by emergency services, so he felt that it could have been him and that the risks were 10 times worse than he had expected. So, he went 40 miles altogether, and probably more because they actually ended up getting turned around for a short time. I honestly think he lost 10 pounds last week. He spent two nights in a hotel and came home Friday, bravely admitting that he just was not prepared. It was supposed to snow for two days and he could have recovered at the hotel but he decided his vision was not going to support his goal of 4 months on the trail.

The great Wilderness Adventure vacation trip of a lifetime - can and does often cost people their life - that is so true. I am glad to read that your BF is back and safe - it could have been worse. Good point about not only the RDI or quantity of food but the importance of the quality of the food - very important and that sounds like a good book. I will make a note of it. Thanks.

"Healthy eating increases energy and improves the way the body and the brain work." I quote that fact all of the time and it is well repeating most of the time.
