Just want to put it out there: I don't do keto. I eat whatever the heck I want to. But since I want to also lose weight, I count the calories and I get out and exercise 3 or 4 times a week. Shooting for 5 times a week exercise but usually don't make it, so I just got an exercise bike for my house too. It was free - lots of exercise equipment is given away for free!
EDITED TO ADD: I have no overriding health issues so I do have many options when it comes to what I eat - I know diabetes is reduced greatly by a ketogenic/low carb diet - so no intention to say any WOE is "bad" just not what I am capable of achieving.
This morning I gave away the rest of the cookies my friend gave me because every time I saw them I had to have one and they are 100 calories apiece.
One thing that makes me seriously check what I am doing all the time is seeing the pictures of food on this site, hearing that the person hasn't been losing, and then realizing that half of what they show in their picture isn't counted in their food for the day. So, I try to be honest even though I would really like to trick myself into thinking that the cookie at midnight before I go to bed is really something to count on the next day. Or that the sip of wine on the holidays isn't really 10 ounces of calorie-filled sugar. Or that a sprinkling of cheese doesn't need to count or that low-fat means a daily dose won't add up.
So, calories in, calories out. If I am really going to live this way for the rest of my life, then I really need to know what I am actually doing to myself. Can't change a habit you won't admit to yourself.
Got my butt off the couch and abandoned my pets last night to get to the dance to burn off that lemon cookie! Going out dancing tonight too. The dancing is also a social time - there are people at the dances that I only see at the dances, but I have be seeing the same people and dancing with them for over 5 years now so that is my social time as well as exercise. Check out contradance if you are looking to burn some calories: 800 calories in two hours!
Off to log in those midnight snacks. Have a GREAT Friday!

I agree with everyone. Finding something that will work for you is so important. I count calories try to stay around 1200 to 1500. I beginning to add some exercise to mine. I like to walk so I'm trying to do at least 3 to 4 days a week 3 or 4 miles. Some days my schedule won't allow but I'm trying to be consistent and steadfast in what I'm doing.

Everybody gets to diet however they please, and more power to you. Just to be clear, keto is not a fad diet. It is clearly based in science and empirical studies. It is used to treat a number of issues, syndromes, and diseases. For myself, I do keto *and* count calories. I like data. All the best.

No offense meant @HardDaysKnight et al, I just don't have any ideas about how to make keto work. I do know that diabetics and pre-diabetics benefit greatly from the keto diet.

Keto isn't everyone, if you refuse to give up certain foods, and those foods have to be avoided on certain diets, then those diets aren't for you.

@captmrbles: Just want to mention that ketogenic plans are NOT a fad. Doctors have prescribed keto plans for many many years for different medical issues. It is interesting research.

This is my soapbox so apologies in advance. No such thing as 'diabetes'....only Type I Diabetes and Type II Diabetes. Type I cannot be avoided or cured by diet, and is currently incurable. My first husband was diagnosed at 12, and passed from complications at 40. (That was many, many years ago and many improvements have been made since. We were not married at the time.) My grandson was diagnosed at 7. He is now 21. I hope I have not offended anyone. Since the epidemic of Type II, I feel that Type I had been pushed to the background, often to the point, even by medical people on the news, that no distinction is even made: they just launch into diet advice for Type II. Thanks for listening.

Flinthillsgirl - I think the reason why no-one mentions Type 1 diabetes on the news or websites like this is precisely because it can't be avoided or cured by diet, or anything else, and it's just easier to say "diabetes" than "Type II diabetes" all the time. It's a shame they didn't give them different names completely to avoid confusion but I think we're stuck with it now. As you say, there are many improvements in treatment for avoiding the complications of Type I these days and I hope your grandson is careful about his sticking to his meds so he can live a long and happy life.
