I admit: I am not the poster child for losing weight - I am losing at the rate of 1 pound per MONTH. However, advice is my topic for today. Now that I am loudly trying to lose weight, I have received a constant stream of information about how to do it, what other people are doing, and I am sure you know, just what I am doing wrong wrong wrong and how to fix it. This advise comes from all over - here on fatsecret, at work, at home, at my volunteer places - all of it good, don't get me wrong, just it's like people telling me to wear green because it looks good on them - no, no, not everything is going to work for me!

Different people swear by different methods, but there is only one secret. Take in fewer calories than you burn each day so that you are burning off calories. That is it.

Ok, that is a given. Now, what about how to do that? Lots of people say exercise is the way to go, others say you can eat your way thin. Some people say you have to be ready, others say that baby steps are the way to go. And I agree with the babysteps, because I am lazy. Very lazy. And I do NOT like pain. As we figured out earlier last month I am allergic to pain!

Think about it: there are people losing weight every day and they are in COMAS! They are not exercising AT ALL! So, I think the fact that I am walking and still conscious means I am ahead of the game and I am not rushing into any exercise or starving myself on a daily basis yet. I did start the weight lifting classes 2 times a week - I am not stupid enough to think I have enough will power to eat my way thin 100%!

But here is another thing: I don't think that it takes a monumental readjustment to start losing - as a matter of fact, some of the advise that seemed to work best for people was to start slow. Pick one thing to change and focus on that. Cut out bread or meat or mayo and spreadable fats. Research that I have read says: make substitutions, so I have been using salsa instead of butter or mayo, lots of veggies instead of chips for snacks, and even with the onion dip, the calorie count goes down, also cutting down on plain white breads. That is weight watchers latest focus - out with the bad, in with the good. You can eat more volume of good stuff than bad stuff. And by bad, I mean high calorie low nutrient processed foods.

Anyway: why do we eat too much? Because we aren't paying attention. And paying attention takes a lot of time and effort and information if you are out of practice. So here is my advice: start small. This week figure out how to lighten up your breakfast choices and maybe add some variety. Then next week fix your lunches. See what happens after a month. Then fix something else.

Rome wasn't built in a day but someone got the idea for it and started by building one house. Here is hoping you get one good weight loss idea and have success with it this week! Good luck everyone!

I am there with you on a lot of levels. HATE pain, sweating my butt off and depriving myself. I am lazy! I am losing slowly too. And I do not do what a lot of others think I should. I did that in the past and it did not work for any length of time. I think you are so right about doing things a little at a time and finding what works for you. Starving yourself is not the answer by any means. It may work for the short term but the long haul is what matters. OH...and the whole not paying attention! WOO HOO! SOOO RIGHT! Eating mindfully really does wonders! YOU GO GIRL!! :)

I like your philosophy. I am trying to come up with a food/exercise combination that I enjoy and that I can keep doing without feeling like I am "working" at it. Something that I can keep up with even after I'm not so focused on it anymore. And hey, even a baby step is light years better than where I started! Have a good day.

A big hug for you and your journal today. Wonderful words of wisdom and I certainly got a lot out of it. Keep doing what you doing and I am going to do some of the same. :-)

You are so right abba. Doing something and being aware is better than doing nothing. People lose in different ways and at different rates. I was a very slow loser basically losing a pound a month myself no matter what I did. I started exercising and told myself just to keep going even if nothing happened and nothing did for a long time. We have to do what is right for us and just keep doing it to be healthy. I loved your post.

Awesome journal today! I am sooooooooo glad I checked in with ya. What you said about NOT paying ATTENTION really rang true with me. To be AWARE of what goes into our bodies is soooooo important. We deserve to pay attention to ourselves. It might be because I "bought into" the South Beach plan so completely when I experienced very quick weight loss during the first two weeks - but I must proclaim - that for me - personally - simple reduction in calories did not work for me. I am not speaking for you or anyone else. The kinds of foods did make and continue to make a big difference in lots of ways. I have also got to admit that I have a VERY HARD time losing weight without LOTS of exercise. As we have all said many times - everybody is different.

One more thing to echo - we can all agree how important it is to ENJOY our food. One of my favorite parts of Fat Secret is that moment when I log on and the little windo pops up that says "Fat Secret - ALL THINGS FOOD . . . "
