I keep thinking of what I should post in regards to my cardiologist visit. I'm kind of in shock as it wasn't the news I expected. I thought cardiac specialist was gonna say that all was as expected and see you next year..That didn't happen. The cardiac specialist said that the pacemaker lead ( wire)that was broken ( has been since 2019) is becoming embedded in the vein that goes into the heart and it needs to be removed. Because it is embedded they are worried about me getting an infection or worse. They cannot just go in and pull it out to replace it. It is basically stuck in vein. They have to place a sheath ( like a tiny knife) inside the vein and it cuts lead away. Then they have to place a snare ( similar to a hook) inside vein to pull it out. This is all done inside the vein so you can imagine how small the instruments are! They only have 1 doctor here that performs the surgery and he is retiring. The doctor is sending me to UCSD to see a specialist there. They are supposed to be best place in US to have this type of surgery done. I'm just waiting for insurance approval. When I asked Dr about complications and risks he said if instrument pierces heart you die.. Well ok then...sorry I asked!

Please know you are cherished here and so long as it feels right, keep us along for this time so that we might do our best to keep your spirits high. There is not much 'to do' which I imagine can be both good and bad but know that we're eager to support you even if it is just in reading, and acknowledging we've read, your posts.

Deep breaths, Diana, just breathe. You know that I’ve got loved ones in similar spots. UCSD is absolutely one of the best teaching hospitals in the country, are you going to the one in La Jolla? It’s an amazing place. I have friends that used to work there and they have told me it’s top notch as a teaching hospital.
As far as the wire breaking and being embedded, while there may only be one doctor where you are that does this, it’s going to be okay. That also happened here, although it had not pierced a vein. That was about five years ago now and surgery went fine. They have to tell you about all the risks if you ask. I’m not trying to minimize it, just saying to put it into perspective. You have done amazing things with your body in keeping it healthy and you’re going to be okay. I have faith in this. You can message me with questions if you want, but no pressure either. Heart is truly an amazing organ Diana, it does all sorts of things to keep pumping. You still lead an exceptionally active life despite the broken pacemaker, you’ve got to believe that you are endowed with a rock star heart. I feel it in my bones that all will be well. Sending you serenity❤️

wow, that’s a lot to get dumped on you. looking at the risk numbers, it does seem like if you had to get heart surgery, lead extraction is one of the safer ones (and safer than getting the pacemaker put in, but that is just a layperson googling…). but wow sucks to hear that you need surgery. this is where all of the fitness behaviors you’ve been doing pay for themselves. stay strong and best of luck.

I ask your forgiveness for any time I may have given you unsolicited advice regarding your diet or workouts. That was never my place since you have shared so much in this forum. Like you, I have some ongoing medical issues that I have been dealing with since my early twenties. What I tell myself, and family and friends who have different health challenges is to never go to that "dark place". Stay positive and see the future as full of sunshine and good health. See the future and the course of your recovery because that vision has more healing power than many people realize. ❤️

That’s scary news to receive. I’ve gone through multiple pacemakers but so far I’m on the original leads so I don’t have any direct experience to share with you. Going to the best hospital is a great idea.
