So I caved and had the pizza. By my calculations it was still only about 600 calories, which I can handle since I will be eating dinner at home tonight. But all in all, I wish I had skipped the whole meeting. It wasn't mandatory, it was a celebration for the March birthdays in our department.
Now there is a lot of backstory here but to get to the point I have to at least summarize it. I have been with this company for 8 years (at the end of June), I have a specialized job that I have built from the ground up. Not to say I am not compensated, but I have been passed over for promotions for the reason of not knowing about the other positions within my team. Well I am now part of a smaller team (they moved my whole job) and have spent the last few years learning everything I could. I was finally promoted to a lead position in August, with the promise of being made a supervisor this year (along with another co-worker with a different specialty). Well in the course of the last year there have been many changes to our company. We report to a different Director and VP and my boss is at odds with the director. 2 weeks ago my boss (my buffer) went out on stress leave. When she did, she apparently named my counterpart "in charge" of the department... even though we have the same title and I have more seniority, she is responsible for a bigger section of the department. Since she has been gone, I have slowly been stripped of all responsibility I had over my half of the team and now my temp employee is even having her sign her time cards. Ouch. I worked so damn hard for this and now I feel like it has been taken away.
So today, during this celebration, one of the activities was giving everyone on our respective teams a star (recognition) for something they have done. I wrote up something nice about the 4 team members that work under me as did my counterpart with her team. At the end of the exercise, the management team went out of their way to recognize my counterpart for taking on extra responsibility during our manager's absence. At that moment, I was the only person in our department that didn't have something nice said about them. That really hurt. If it wasn't for one of my team members noticing that and at first hinting that they had missed me, then saying something herself I would have been left out completely.
It makes me feel completely unappreciated for the hard work I have put in all these years and really hurt. For the last month I have had my nose to the grindstone working on every damn rush project that they could throw at me, with at least two people on my team gone at any given time, including my right hand woman who has been on leave since the beginning of the month due to family tragedy. I do appreciate the kind words that Lin had to say about me but she would have done it for anyone, that's why we call her mama Lin and she is my walking buddy and knows what has been going on with me lately. No one else, even the management team I am bending over backwards for had anything nice to say. Only 2 hours till I am off work and can put today behind me.
By skipping it, I could have saved 600 calories and hurt feelings.
**clarification: I have no ill feelings about my co-worker, she is a great person and deserves the recognition. She is actually the BACHELORETTE of tonight's celebration**
